The entertainment industry has been known for churning out films of different genres since it came into existence. These include romance, action, tragedy, comedy and thriller movies, but the excitement generated by movies of detective genre makes them stand above the rest. Good detective movies have a plot with the ability to make the viewers stick to their seats from the beginning to end.

Here is the list of top 10 detective movies:

1- Chinatown (1974)


On the top of the list of best detective movies is the classic film of 1974, Chinatown, which is the story of a private detective investigating an adultery case, but discovering a murder plot involved in it. The twists and turns in the movie make it a great watch till date, decades after its making. The lead roles have been played by Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway and the film has been directed by Roman Polanski.

The second spot on the list of top 10 detective movies is occupied by “The Maltese Falcon”, the 1941 movie based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett, with the same name. The film revolves around the detective Sam Spade, who deals with a case involving a priceless falcon statuette, being chased by three evil explorers. Humphrey Bogart, playing the role of Spade, has set the perfect example of playing this part to perfection.

4- Se7en (1995)


On the fourth rank in the list of top 10 detective movies is the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman starrer “Se7en”. Morgan Freeman plays the role of detective William Somerset while Brad Pitt stars as David Mills, who joins him in solving the case of their lives. The gripping case involves a serial killer who uses seven deadly sins as the way of killing his victims and these two men have to stop the killer before he reaches his next victim.

5- L.A. Confidential (1997)

This movie portrays the L.A. of the fifties, set in a backdrop of crime and political monarchy. Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce play the detectives who are out to investigate the cold blooded murder of some people in a night club. This is the story which is loved by the hardcore detective movie fans.

6- The Fugitive (1993)

A movie about Dr Richard Kimble, who is wrongly framed in the murder case of his wife, but who escapes and is declared a fugitive, this one has all the elements of a mind blowing detective movie. While the fugitive is out to prove his innocence, Samuel Gerard (played by Tommy Lee Jones) aims to capture him. The film, directed by Andrew Davis and starring Harrison Ford and Jones, was nominated for 7 Academy Awards.

7- Fargo (1996)

Sitting on no. 7 in the list of top 10 detective movies is the American film “Fargo”. It is the story of a pregnant police chief Marge McDormand, who is out to investigate the case of the kidnap of the wife of an automobile salesman, Jerry. The kidnapping which is planned by Jerry himself to get out of financial problems, turns out into a violent affair. The movie is written by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen and directed by Joel Coen.

8- The Bone Collector (1999)

This movie is about a strange case of a killer who leaves his signature by removing a bone from the bodies of his victims. The case is taken up by a detective, Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington), who has been paralyzed in an accident and his assistant Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie). This movie shows some resemblance to the classic Sherlock Holmes films.

9- Dirty Harry (1971)

The story of the San Francisco cop Dirty Harry Callahan and his pursuits of the serial killer “Scorpio”, in which he loses him twice but is able to kill him the third encounter, this film occupies the ninth rank on this list. It stars Clint Eastwood in the lead role and has been directed by Don Siegel.

10- The Big Sleep (1946)

On the tenth spot in the list of top 10 detective movies is “The Big Sleep”, based on the novel with the same name. It stars Humphrey Bogart as detective Marlowe, who is out to solve a murder case for a rich, elderly man, but new mysteries make the case difficult for him.
