Top 10 defenders in the FIFA World Cup 2014

A good defender is vital if a team is to prevail and as we wait for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, let’s look at the top 10 defenders we will be looking out for to stop the strikers form scoring this summer.

1. Thiago Silva (Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain)

Thiago is a total package of a defender. His tackling is superb, his air command is outstanding. It just comes naturally for Thiago; his ball control is always at ease. He helped PSG win their first league title in 20 years and he even played as a midfield when injuries struck the team. He is the definition of a perfect defender.

2. Vincent Kompany (Belgium and Manchester City)

Komoany is indicated as the most thrilling defender in the world of football. He is always cool and collected and his quickness and physical power is just abominable to any striker.  He prevails good on air and was a key factor in helping Man City win the EPL this season.

3. Philipp Lahm (Germany and Bayern Munich)

Lahm has been the number 1 choice defender for German for quite some time. His prowling runs make it hard for anyone to get past him; he is known for disappointing the opposing teams attack. His ability to play with both feet has makes him a force to reckon with. He has won just about anything one can win with Bayern Munich.

4. Gerard Pique (Spain and Barcelona)

The Barcelona player was a key character in helping Spain win the World cup in 2010. He is a collected defender with good tackling and sturdy in air. He has won almost all in Barcelona and is a product of the academic school at the club. Pique claims to know all Christiano’s tricks.

5. Sergio Ramos (Spain and Real Madrid)

Ramos has brilliant speed and is very steadfast in tackling. His dedication time and time sees him getting in the wrong side with the referees and for this it is hard to complete a season without a red card.  Ramos has great air control and this was evident this season at Real with his outstanding number of goals, he helped Real win the Champions League in 2014 as he scored all important goals. He is key for both Spain and Real.

6. Giorgio Chiellini (Italy and Juventus)

This outstanding Italian has had a wonderful season at Juventus since joining the Club in 2005. He has won the defender of the year 3 times and helped the club win 3 straight Serie A league trophies. In Italy, he has scored four times since he debuted in 2004.

7. Nemanja Vidic (Serbia and Man United)

 

Despite not playing in a dominant national team, this Man United defender has been very stingy throughout the times he has played. He has a strong air command and always clears the balls and has had an amazing season together with Ferdinand at Man U. He has been a captain for long and has achieved quite a lot at Man United. His time at Man United is coming to an end as he is moving to Inter Milan.

8. Ashley Cole (England and Chelsea)

Ashley is among the few defenders in the world who has seized Christiano Ronaldo from time to time at his time in Manchester United. He is considered one of the best left back defenders in the game. His is capable of dribbling, attack, at give good crosses.

9. Daniel Alves (Brazil and Barcelona)

The Brazzilian despite playing as a second choice to Maicon over the years for Brazil, the right back defender has been a first choice for Barcelona as he is very dominant in the game. Alves has an outstanding pace, gives amazing crosses and is a pro in taking free kicks. He always scores in a season and has won many prestigious titles with Barcelona including two UEFA Champions League trophies.

10. Patrice Evra (France and Man United)

He is a rival to Cole in the football world for being the best left back in the game. He is a very tough and versatile tackler and his crossing makes him provide good passes to the midfield. He has great air control and has scores for his club and country for several times.
