However, much as these movies are said to be based on real historical events, they often contain added drama, setting and characters so as to increase popularity of the movie as well as avoid undesired scenes. Serpico (1973)

Serpico is an America crime drama about Frank Serpico, a New York Police. The film is adapted from Frank’s biography written by Peter Maas. Frank is an honest police who goes a mile to expose rampant corruption in the police force.

Papillon (1973)

Papillon is a French name meaning “butterfly” in English. The film is about a French convict Henri “Papillon” Charriere who is convicted of alleged murder in 1930. After befriending a fellow convict Louis Dega, Henri plans a dreadful escape from the French penal colony on Devil’s Island. The film is based on Henri Charriere’s best-selling autobiography.

All the President’s Men (1976)

Directed by Alan J. Pakula, All the President’s Men is a political thriller based on 1974 non-fiction book, “All the President’s Men” written by two journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward who were investigating the Watergate break-in scandal. The book chronicles the investigative reports by the two journalists. Two years after the book was published, a film adaptation of the same was released being produced by Robert Redford.

Goodfellas (1990)

Goodfellas is an epic crime drama film based on 1986 non-fiction book by Nicholas Pileggi; Wiseguy. The film depicts the rise of Henry Hill and his friends through the mob hierarchy.

Schindler’s List (1993)

Schindler’s list is based on the life Oskar Schindler who saves the lives of thousands of Polish-Jewish refugees after witnessing the execution the Nazis during World War II. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg.

Apollo 13 (1995)

Apollo 13 is a motion picture adaptation of the book; Lost Moon: The perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, which was authored by two astronauts Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. The film, directed by Ron Howard, illustrates the unsuccessful American lunar mission in 1970.

Braveheart (1995)

Mel Gibson’s Braveheart is a historical drama war film which details the dreaded First War of Scottish independence against England’s King Edward. It features a 13th century Scottish warrior, William Wallace who led the Scots in the bloody war. Critics are convinced that Braveheart is a historical inaccurate movie.

Hotel Rwanda (2004)

This is a Rwanda based historical drama which shows the true story of an hotelier, Paul Rusesabagina. The epic film documents the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The movie has been dubbed Africa’s version of Schindler’s List. During the bloody war, Paul saved the lives of 1,200 people as about 800,000 lives were lost.

Argo (2012)

Released on August 31, 2012, Argo is a dramatic historical thriller directed by American film director and producer Ben Affleck. The film is based on a selection of The Master of Disguise by Tony Mendez. Tony Mendez is an American CIA agent who launched an extremely imperious operation to rescue six American diplomats who were held hostages in Tehran in 1980 under the guise of a Hollywood producer.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

This movie is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, an American motivational speaker and former stockbroker. In his memoirs, Jordan recounted his rise to a wealthy stockbroker to ending up in prison. The film involves crime, drugs and corruption and is based on Jordan’s memoirs.
